The Process For How to Properly Dispute Your Property Tax in Fulton County

In Fulton County, it's the Tax Commissioner that is in charge of collecting property taxes on behalf of the local government every year. Your property taxes go to fund the school systems, the local governments and other entities of that nature.

To arrive at the value of taxes that you're expected to pay, the Commissioner will take the appraised value of your home, along with any exemption status offered by the Board of Tax Assessors, and consider it alongside the millage rates. At that point, you'll be sent a tax bill indicating exactly how much you're supposed to pay and when that bill is due.

Property Taxes in Fulton County: An Overview

First, you should know that you only have 45 days from the date listed on your assessment notice to file an appeal. This is according to the directions listed on the Fulton County website with regards to how one might file an appeal for their Notice of Assessment. If you fail to do so before that time, you waive your right and must pay whatever amount is listed on the bill you get in the mail.

Likewise, understand that you can only appeal the assessed value of your home - you're not actually appealing the estimated tax bill directly. Don't worry, however, as appealing the former will absolutely impact the latter.

Then, you'll want to fill out your appeal form. You can download it and print it out directly from the Fulton County website if you choose, at which point you'll have to either send it in the mail (again, postmarked within 45 days of receipt of the assessment) or drop it off at any of the five locations of the Tax Assessor throughout the county. You can also file your appeal online to save time.

When you dispute property tax in Fulton County, there is obviously a very specific process you have to follow. It's one that can be equal parts stressful and time-consuming - that is, if you choose to go it alone.
