Tax Deductions

Tax exemptions are obviously tax deductions, which reduce the total tax payable for the real property.  Keep in mind that these tax exemptions are not arbitrary in nature since these are mandated by law in terms of the persons eligible, the documentary evidence required, and the deadlines for filing.

You can contact or visit the Hall County Tax Assessors’ Office at 770-531-6720 for more information. You may also ask a Hall County tax consultant for the type of exemptions you may be qualified for under the law. You may actually be advised to file for exemptions even when you initially believe that you are not eligible.

Eligible Taxpayers

Each type of tax exemption has requirements in terms of who can apply.  The most common type is the homestead exemption, which exempts from taxes a specific amount of the property’s assessed value. The taxpayer/applicant should both own and occupy the property as of January 1 of the taxable year to qualify for it.

You and your Hall County tax consultant should discuss which of these exemptions you may be eligible for.

  • Standard homestead exemption. You must own and reside in the property on January 1.
  • Senior citizens exemption. You must be 65 years old on or before January 1 and meet income requirements.
  • Total school tax exemption. You must be a resident of Hall County and at least 70 years old on or before January 1. There are no income requirements.
  • Partial school tax exemption. You must be at least 62 years old on or before January 1 and meet income requirements.
  • Disabled veterans’ exemption. You must provide a letter or certification from the Veteran’s Administration certifying that your disability is 100% directly related to service.
  • Disabled person’s exemption. You must submit a certificate from a licensed physician stating that you are physically or mentally unable to seek and maintain gainful employment. The certificate must also state that your disability is likely permanent.
  • Extra homestead exemption for the elderly. You should be older than 65 years on January 1 of the applicable year. You must provide proof of age although there are no income qualifiers. Your home and up to 10 acres of land only are qualified for the exemption.

You should take advantage of these tax exemptions because of the monetary savings that you can enjoy. Your Hall County tax consultantor the Hall County Tax Assessor will be able to ascertain your eligibility and prepare the papers.

Youwill need to be vigilant about submitting your written application for any of these tax exemptions. In Hall County, the most important dates include:

  • January 1. This is the valuation date for taxation purposes as well as the date the owner must reside at the real property to qualify.
  • January 1 to April 1. This is the period to file property tax returns, which can be filed either in person or sent via mail. This isn’t really necessary unless you have done additions to your property that you want the tax assessor’s to be aware of.
