An Overview of How to Appeal a Tax Assessment in Fulton County

On an annual basis, the Board of Assessors in Fulton County issues all residents an assessment notice - a document that includes the fair market value of the home in question. This value is what is used to determine the amount you'll pay in property taxes, so it's safe to say that if you disagree with it you should absolutely file an appeal as soon as you're able to do so.

In accordance with state law, you have 45 days from the receipt of your notice to submit that appeal for consideration. Doing so involves a very specific process that will require you to keep a number of important things in mind.

Appeal Tax Assessment in Fulton County: Your Guide

Filing your appeal is something that you can do in a few different ways, so long as you do so by the deadline date on the notice itself. You can fill out and submit your form online at the Fulton County Assessor's website, or you can download the form and send it in the mail. You can also submit it in person at any of the five locations of the Fulton County Tax Assessor in the area.

Note that the appeal process itself can easily take several months or more, so you're going to have to be patient. You'll also have to choose from one of three options pertaining to how, exactly, you'd like to see your appeal concluded.

You can always choose to have a hearing before the Board of Equalization, which will give you the chance to state your case directly. Or, you can go through a non-binding arbitration process - but note that this will be based on your valuation only, and no other factors.

If you prefer, you can also choose to have your appeal heard in front of a Hearing Officer. Although if you choose to go this route, understand that additional costs and fees may apply depending on the specifics of your situation.

If you get a temporary tax bill during this process, you absolutely need to pay it or you could be subject to additional fees and penalties.
