Hopefully, you made it through the last property tax season without any issues. But, even if you did – or if you’re new to DeKalb county – it’s important to know how the DeKalb County Tax Assessor works, and what the property tax system is like in the area. So, we thought it would be helpful to provide a bit of a refresher course for the seasoned vets, and some general information for people who are new to the area!

When Are Tax Assessments Mailed?

Generally speaking, the DeKalb County tax assessment process begins in earnest in the month of June. Following the new round of assessments, homeowners and business owners in the county can expect to be notified of the new millage rate sometime in July. Tax bills will also be sent out soon after.

How Do I Pay Property Tax in DeKalb County?

DeKalb County gives homeowners and business owners two options when it comes to paying property taxes. First, they can elect to pay their property tax in installments. If you elect this option, your first payment will be due on September 30th, and the second payment will be due on November 15th. Of course, you can always elect to pay your DeKalb County property taxes in one lump sum. If you’re going to do that, then your property taxes will be due on September 30th.

What Happens If I’m Late Paying My DeKalb County Property Tax?

What happens will depend on the payment method you elect. If you’re paying in installments, payments that are made after the two separate installment dates will be subject to a 5% penalty if they’re late. If you elect to go with the lump-sum payment, which is due on September 30th, then you’ll be subject to an additional 1% penalty each month for the amount that’s due thereafter.

Late payments are determined by the post-marked date on the envelope in which the payment is mailed. It’s important to note that this postmark must come from the post office if you’re running close to the deadline, as the DeKalb County tax assessor will not honor a postmark that’s been created by an office meter. Of course, if you’re getting close to the deadline, you can always submit your payment online through the DeKalb County tax commissioner’s website.

How Can I Find Out What My Property Has Been Assessed At?

A good place to start is on the DeKalb County tax assessor’s webpage. Of course, if you run into issues or would simply prefer to speak with someone directly, you can always call their offices by dialing (404) 371-0841.
