It’s getting to be that time of year again that we all dread, the time of year when the Gwinnet County tax assessor comes around to assess the value of our properties. With the way things have been trending lately, it’s safe to say that we can all expect to see a bump in the property taxes that we’ll have due this year. Of course, if you’re new to the area, or simply haven’t paid much attention to the tax assessment process in Gwinnett County, you may be wondering how everything works. So, let us explain.

What Happens During a Field Visit

In most cases, you may not even notice that a Gwinnett County tax assessor has even visited your property. Typically, they’ll be coming around during the day to residential and business properties to assess their values. If you do happen to be at home when the Gwinnett County tax assessor arrives though, don’t be alarmed. They’ll be easily identifiable, as the cars that they drive will be marked, and they’ll be carrying IDs and business cards, which identify them as tax assessors.

If they’re at your home while you’re at home, you won’t need to pay them any mind. They’ll simply be walking around the property to investigate the size of your home and to check out any new construction projects that you may have ongoing. They have no reason to enter the interior of your home. If you encounter someone who claims to be a tax assessor and asks to enter your home, be sure to contact the authorities immediately. If you’re not at home when they visit, you’ll know that they came due to a notice that they’ll leave on your door.

For business owners things can be a little different. Some businesses will have blocked off areas that prevent the Gwinnett County tax assessors from doing their jobs. For this reason, it’s possible that the tax assessor may ask for your assistance in gaining access to certain areas of your property. If this happens, be sure to verify their credentials before you let them into any secure areas. Otherwise, the process is pretty much the same.

What Happens After That?

After your property has been assessed, you will be mailed a tax assessment notice and later a property tax bill that reflects the new millage rate in Gwinnett County. If you are unhappy with the taxable value the Gwinnett County tax assessor has placed on your property to have the right to file a property tax appeal. You can expect to receive this bill sometime later in the summer. The deadline to pay your property tax bill is October 1st, and it’s important that you don’t miss this deadline. Late payments are subject to a 10% penalty, with a 1% penalty being assessed for every additional month that your Gwinnett County property tax payment is late.
